The Blunderbuss "Blazio" Boom Boom
Ham, turkey, cheddar, tomato, lettuce, pickles, mayonnaise and Dijon are stacked on toasted bread in a sandwich named for one of Sarah’s friends from Missouri. It is basically a sturdy deli sandwich wearing a gaming handle and shouting through a megaphone.
What It Is
This is a hot deli-style ham, turkey and cheddar sandwich finished with fresh lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo and Dijon.
Origin
The recipe is a Dinner by the Minute personal creation associated with a friend from Missouri. The source lists St. Joseph, Missouri as its origin, but that refers to this recipe’s personal connection rather than a historical sandwich category.
Fun Fact
Layering cheese between warm deli meats helps it melt without requiring the entire sandwich to be heated long enough to destroy the lettuce. Sometimes sandwich engineering actually matters.
Ingredients
- 2 slices ham
- 4 slices turkey breast
- 2–3 iceberg lettuce leaves
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 2–4 tomato slices
- 2–3 pickles
- 4 slices white bread
- 3 oz cheddar cheese
- Optional: salt, pepper, paprika or sage
Steps
- Lightly toast the bread.
- Spread mayonnaise and Dijon on one side of each slice.
- Build the warm layers with turkey, ham, cheddar and tomato, keeping lettuce for later.
- Warm the open sandwiches in a 220°F (105°C) oven for about 5 minutes, just until cheese begins to melt.
- Add fresh lettuce to the top bread slices.
- Close the sandwiches and serve with pickle spears.
Notes
The source’s diet labels include gluten-free despite specifying white bread. It is gluten-free only if gluten-free bread is substituted.
Substitutions
Use whole-grain, rye or gluten-free bread. Swap cheddar for Swiss, provolone or pepper Jack. Add paprika, sage, dill or pepper.
Storage
Best eaten immediately. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 24 hours, though fresh lettuce will wilt.
Freezing
Do not freeze assembled.
