Rick & Morty’s Szechuan Sauce

What It Is

Hoisin, vinegar, pepper, lemon, Marmite and sesame oil make a tiny, intensely savoury Szechuan-inspired sauce that takes almost no time and still somehow arrives with fandom baggage.

Origin

This is a Rick and Morty-inspired Szechuan-style dipping sauce. It is not a traditional Sichuan sauce and does not pretend six ingredients can summarize an entire regional cuisine.

Fun Fact

Real Sichuan cuisine is famous for ma-la flavour: numbing Sichuan pepper paired with chili heat. This fandom sauce goes in a completely different direction.

Notes

No, finding this sauce will not complete your character arc. It may, however, make chicken nuggets substantially less depressing.

A genuinely respectable nutrition profile. No red flags here — go ahead and feel a little smug about it.

Substitutions

Soy sauce can replace hoisin in a pinch, though you'll lose the sweetness hoisin brings. Any dark vinegar can stand in for white vinegar for a deeper flavour. Marmite is doing something specific and hard to replace here — Worcestershire is the closest reasonable stand-in if you truly can't find it.

Storage

Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks — this sauce holds up well thanks to the vinegar and soy base, no interdimensional preservation required.

Freezing

Freezing is usually unnecessary for a small batch of sauce. If you do freeze it, use small portions and expect creamy or emulsified sauces to need a good whisk after thawing.
